Crusty Round Sandwich Loaf

This is my all-time favorite bread recipe to make because it doesn't take much effort and can be made within an hour. I make some special adjustments to get more rise out of the bread, but if you don't have the time, there is absolutely no need to worry; this bread recipe is just what you need. I've used it to make super-bomb turkey bacon sandwiches, toast with the best homemade jam, or just ripe off a big hunk to dip into my warm bowl of soup on a winter evening. Whatever the case may be, this will definitely change your perspective on making bread as well as your taste buds.

Low Effort, Maximum Flavor

This recipe originated from my early ventures into baking bread, sparked by endless searches for the perfect recipe online. You know how it goes - diving deep into the rabbit hole in pursuit of that ideal combination of crustiness and soft, bouncy texture. I was determined to craft a loaf that avoided the common pitfalls of dense textures or excessive quantity. The result? A simple round loaf designed to yield just enough for 4-5 servings, perfectly suited for a family of four. I deliberately leaned towards a savory taste profile, aiming to counterbalance the often overly sweet nature of sandwich bread. Of course, if you have a sweet tooth, feel free to adjust the sugar ratio to your liking!

Crusty Round Sandwich Loaf

Ingredients

Here are the ingredients for the recipe:

  • 1 cup of warm water

  • 2 1/4 teaspoon of instant yeast (or you can use 1 active dry yeast packet)

  • 1 teaspoon of honey

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 1/2 -3/4 cups of all purpose flour

Directions

1. In a large bowl, combine water, yeast, and honey. Allow the mixture to sit for 5 minutes, or until it becomes foamy.

2. Add olive oil, flour, and salt to the wet mixture. Stir until the dough just comes together, then transfer it onto a lightly floured surface.

3. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes, or until it springs back when lightly pressed.

4. Place the dough ball into a lightly greased container and let it rise for about an hour in a warm area, or until it doubles in size.

5. Preheat the oven to 460°F. Place a cast iron dish in the oven during the preheating process.

6. Once the dough has doubled in size, place it on a lightly floured surface and shape it into a ball. Allow it to rise for an additional 30 minutes.

7. After 30 minutes, score the bread with any desired design.

8. Remove the hot preheated cast iron dish from the oven and carefully place the dough into it. Cover with the lid and bake for 30 minutes.

9. After 30 minutes, remove the lid and continue baking uncovered for about 10 minutes, or until the bread develops a nice golden brown exterior.

10. Allow the bread to rest for 30 minutes, or until it's cool to the touch.

11. Serve with butter or alongside your favorite home cooked meal, and enjoy!
